Tambora Challenge 2018.

meUsai sudah, 4 hari x rata2 200 huruf x rata2 150 kali update= 120.000 x penceten jempol kanan kiri. Termasuk kesalahan pencetan angka 3 untuk e, huruf w untuk a, bolak- balik kesalahan huruf besar- kecil😊.
Usai sudah, sinyal hilang- timbul dibeberapa ruas jalan, daya battery hp yg drop sebelum akhirnya bertemu sang colokan listrik tersayang.
2 x bablas ketidurannya di 2 malam yg tak usah saya ceritakan. Malu😊.
Semua hal diatas adalah sedikit persembahan saya, yang saya dedikasikan untuk dunia lari- berlari yg saya cintai.

Padahal 52km saat awal MRU( Mount Rinjani Ultra), 2013 jika tak salah, sudah membuat ampun- ampun tak hanya pelari- pelari lokal, mancanegarapun dibuat mutung, kesal dan ambek.

Ah apa juga yg perlu ku khawatirkan. Toh jikapun tak finish aku sudah mencoba. Itukan yg penting?
Did Not Finish selalu lebih baik daripada Did Not Start. Entah dimana pernah kudengar seperti itu.

Ya, aku tahu sebelumnya. Beberapa jawara- jawara ada disini. Kecil kemungkinan bisa dapatkan podium. Tapi? Tunggu dulu. Rasa- rasanya aku melihat peluang di podium 3.
Mereka boleh jawara- jawara, tapi trek panjang dan trel? Dan di Rinjani? Siapa takut. Seorang saya, pengalaman boleh sedikit, usiapun tak lagi terbilang muda. Tapi semangatku  boleh di adu.
Podium 3 kan juga berhadiah. Niat belikan dan bagi- bagikan sembako di desaku, dari hadiah nanti adalah api semangatku yang luar- biasa. AKU BISA!

Dan..dengan biaya dari sang istri untuk menutupi semua biaya dan kelengkapan lari trel sederhanaku, terimakasih Istriku sayang 🙂 , akupun hadir diantara yang start di Senaru, di kategori 100.
Bergabung bersama beberapa pelari- pelari lain, lokal maupun mancanegara, ber gear ya ampun, walau ada satu- dua sesederhana aku, tapi sisanya adalah hmm apik rek 🙂 .

I Did It! Bromo Tengger Semeru 100 Ultra 2013 by Maggie Kim hong Yeo

Maggie001 Maggie002 Maggie003 Maggie004 Maggie005 Maggie006It was meant to be. I was to run the 50 km after tossing and turning about whether I should run longer or not. Afterall, I have just completed a full marathon on the week before on 17 November 2013.Arrived at Surabaya 2 days earlier was great. Coz I for the first time a long time felt I am on holiday. And this trip is my birthday holiday. Met up with Chris Paul Kawinda who kindly checked me into a local hotel coz I arrived real late in the nite. Unfortunately, I had a fall and hurted my left knee after I had a shower on the slippery floor…The next day, we went off to Fitri Ismiyanti place where I stayed the nite at this wonderfully happy spirited lady, a very motiviated and enthusiatic runner. We had such wonderful time laughing eating and even went to meet up with some Indo Runners that evening.So the next morning off we went to Bromo in 2 MPVs and we arrive Lava View Hotel (this is the startline of 100km and 165 km events). Such a lovely view indeed as the hotel name said. Weather was great, cool and calm.Got my racepack, took heaps of photos and met so many other runners.

At 4 am, we were transported to Ranepane, where the startline of 50 km event.

At 5 am sharp, the race begin, and by then the sun has broken into this beautiful mountain. I decided to take off my headlight and put on my cap instead.

After running for about 5 km, my Garmin watch decided to die on me coz I must have accidentally press on the start button while it was in my luggage. Lesson learn, next time I must wear it on my wrist while on the way to race event. Also, I forgot to bring along the charger.

Anyhow I felt great with or without my garmin watch, coz my motive for this event is to graduate into being not just an ultra runner, but to be a real mountain trail ultra runner, so time is no essence…

Shortly after my garmin watch died, I managed to push myself through to lead the ladies pack.

From then on, I was happily running, power walking, through the forest, through the mountain slopes, indeed I was happy, so many has cheered me on. It was unbelievable how many called on to my name. I dont think I can remember all of them. Yet these callings brings such joy to me.

One of the runners, Stefan Knudsen from Denmark decided to tag along and we were happily moving on passing a great number of runners. Along the way, I am unable to remember all names, if you remember, please tag yourself here.

From Ranupane 2100 m down and up to Ranu Kombolo 2400 m W3 station where I decided not to refill anything. Just kept on going to Kalimati 2700 m and had my first drink up of my Fitliine Performance sachet and very quickly making my way to Ranu Kumbolo W4 station. Had a another quick drink of the Fitline Performance sachet and again quickly left the station of W3. These are all beautiful sub tropical not quite tropical, coz the weather is pretty cool, cant tell you the temperature unfortunately, but very comfortable feel and not sweating. Love the view and trees the climb.

Shortly after I arrive at km 25, I came to a junction with 3 ribbons, this was where I got lost. Both me and Stefan decided to turn left and after plodding for a while, we notice there was no more ribbons. Aaagh, we stopped, hesitated and decided to u-turn to get back to the original ribbon. By this time the sun was getting rather fierce.

We ran back unfortunate, we notice the ribbon did tell us to run to the left! And off we got back to the left again and ran all the way to the next junction and this was where we met Rizal Hakeem, we had a chat and told him we have already done this turn and if we run it again, we will be doing our second time on this loop. Nevertheless, there was no other choice but to do the loop one more time.

Then we got to the same junction again and then we turn right instead and then came to the ribbon where we had to go down the very steep hill… yes, here we had lotsa fun… I tried to run down with much difficulties. Finally after less than 5 minutes, I decided to sit on my butt and just let nature take its course… I slide down all the way while the rest of the runners were watching unbelievably at what I was doing. I bet they all did the same after that!!

So I managed to turn something rather dangerouss into something rather fun!! Reminded me of the times when I was liviing In New Zealand when in the summer we often take our flatten cardboxes and go down Mt Victoria at Devonport at the North Shore of Auckland with my kids.

By then I was of course actually hurrying coz I have lost a good 30 minutes too, thats why I decided to slide down… I had to catch up with lost time. Some of the runners have mentioned to me there were quite a few female runners who had passed. So my lead has vanished, alas..

Suddenly from the heat and the weakness, I had 2 energy bars and got back to being strong again. It is amazing to note here, when ones heart decided to get strong, the brain will just follow…

My journey at BTS, became stronger and stronger again….

At some stage here, Stefan who has been faithfully following right behind me deided that he had no more water in the Platypus and get left behind.

I on the other hand had started the next incline to Jempalang. Oh dear, what can I say, this never ending climb took forever.. km 30 just about towards km 35 are the hardest. Because in a marathon, km 35 we start to hit the wall. But I refused to let this never ending incline to give me the negative feeling. I took my Fitline Performance sachet again and kept on going.

Trust me, there were so many Ojek, motorbikers that shouted to to ask if I wanna a lift.. Haha, I have a running bib. No thanks. Along the way, also passed many other runners. So I know I was doing really well in this incline being able to pass others.

So passed W5A station 2400m. And then the down started, I rushed through these broken cement slabs, passing Hui Mathews and her husband along the way, I just ran as I did when I did the Bromo Marathon.. the feeling was great.

Then suddenly, the facade was to change…

The sand start to appear! Wow, the scenery was amazing, beautiful, but the soft sand will be yet another challenge. The savannah look and waves of the sand.. just unbeatable!

I ran along passing yet another lady runner and then I caught up with Handy Trisakti and told him I will try to tag along with him, coz I saw how he walked at an amazing pace. I shall try to keep as close to him as possible.

Coz here, I am starting to feel the lethargic of my legs. After some major running downhill. I was surprised by my own want of my heart. Indeed, I managed to keep up with him.

Shortly after, another set of beautifully made sand dunes started to show. Wow! That was in my mind. This is where I started to eat my Korma, dried dates and sip my drinks.

Beautiful and how am I going to conquer these never ending sand dunes, with the sand storms blowing very often. At some stage Handy had sand in his mouth!!! Full of them, he was complaining, by then I had my glasses on. But I decided I did not need the buff as I was too lazy to take it out from my bag and it will slow me down as well. But the glasses was really good, coz it protected my eyes…

Both of us kept going up and down and up and down those dunes. Soft as they were, beautiful as they were, if u are not careful, you will step wrongly and will roll down these tiny hills and then climbing up again will be a great bother!!

Finally we managed to catch up with another 2 more runners and we were in a pack of 4. We just kept on going and I and Handy managed to take over and got to the next station where I decided to take off my shoes unload the sand (not wearing the gaiter from the start was a great mistake, I should have but I did not). So finally, refill my drinks and had a cafeine gel coz I ran out of my Fitline Performance sachet.

As we started to move I saw Jane Djuarahadi, from the top yelling down as she moved off to complete her run. Both me and Handy went up the steps and down again. Hurrying down, and shortly after that I saw the girl in her hijap again, running infront of me. I was like, hmm where did she come from. I didnt see her passing me at all…

Nevertheless, she was just ahead of me by not much. Then we came to another incline. This is the final incline before we reach Lava View Hotel where the finish line is.

The finish was at 2240m..
The finish was exhilarating…
The finish was an accomplishment to me..
The finish graduated me into a true Mountain Trail Ultra runner…

Something I have been dreaming of since I DNF at Mt MOUNT RINJANI ULTRA!!

I did it! I did my 50 km in 10 hours 8 minutes…

EAST JAVA – INDONESIA – The Mount Bromo Tengger Semeru Ultra Run race is a unique event that aims to challenge your inner spirit and physical state, as well as to provide race participants with magnificent natural beauty and environment of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in East Java – Indonesia at various altitude level.

Running at the high altitude region of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, you will experience tracks filled with various scenery, such as sea of volcanic sand (2.200 masl) with low temperature and strong wind. Then you will be running through rural back roads, forest path and prairie with a distant magnificent view of the highest mountain in Java, Mount Semeru (3.676 masl) and the tranquility of Lake Ranu Kumbolo (2.400 masl).

At last, this Bromo Tengger Semeru Ultra Run race will challenged you through 3 different distances, 160 km, 100 km and 50 km, in comfortable weather conditions and a very scenic route.

  1. You understand the unique nature and requirements of competing in an ultra-long distance trail running race. You will be running in the dark of early morning and all day through mountainous terrain and have undertaken the necessary training to compete in such a race.
  2. You will be responsible for yourself and have the ability to deal with any problems that may be encountered during the race.
  3. You are able to deal with, on your own without assistance, deteriorating weather conditions (low temperatures, strong winds, and rain) and other troubles expected when traveling across mountainous terrain.
  4. You are able to deal with extreme fatigue, internal organ and digestive problems, muscle pain, mild physical injuries and psychological problems on your own.
  5. You fully understand that you are responsible for overcoming the above conditions 1 to 4 on your own and that it is not the responsibility of the race organization.
  6. You are fully aware that when participating in an outdoor activity such as this race, your safety depends on your own skills and abilities.
  7. Video/television footage, photos, articles, race results, etc. may be used and/or shown in newspapers, television, magazines, internet, pamphlets, etc. You understand and agree that these rights belong to the race organization and may be used for these purposes.

If during the 2013 race, you do not meet the above race conditions, your entry to the 2014 race may be declined

Eiger Trail Running Shoes


I got a package of shoes from Eiger today. It was sent home while i was out, but i’m really excited about it so i went to
Eiger Adventure Store Bandung at Jl. Sumatera.

It’s Eiger’s first trail running shoes. Finally we have some local products for trail running. It looks attractive with really bold colors of red and green. It’s one of the few models that’s released at the same time.
It’s already with a quicklace system. So you won’t find any hassle trying to tie it as you run. Not to mention the shoe tongue that’s got some kind of hooks to hold the ties in. Very practical. Like the ones from other international brands. For this model the bottom sole is not a  vibram. But the outside sole looks awesome. It’s got reflector in the back that you can spot at night.
Let’s see how it goes when i use it tomorrow on Jayagiri track of Tangkubanparahu with its rocky road.

Mt Rinjani Ultra 2013. The Story


I started the journey at 600m, reaching Station 1 5.9 km in 1.29 mins and reaching Station 2 2600 m later about 10 km at 3.40 mins. But it was at this station, where I tried to rest for a short while. I felt breathless, I couldnt eat anything in sight, I couldnt even drink much. I couldnt take my energy sachets or anything. At this point, I wanted to give up and wanted to stop.

Hendra Wijaya, was waiting for the 21 km runners, saw me. He told me if I want to quit and return I will have a longer journey. He persuaded me to get to the next station. So we moved on, with very much difficulty. The rocks were huge, it was dark. At that point, I felt so lucky to just have 1 tracking pole as i really need the other hand to hold on to whatever is there and use the one pole I have to help me with my journey on! I remember there were massive rocks, many times I felt like dying because my tummy was very hard, yet there was no vomits nothing.

Hendra was all the time right behind me. I remember, earlier that evening, Nefo had told me that Hendra will not be climbing the Mt Rinjani. Anyhow, I was thankful he was right behind me. As sick as I was, I know what is an ultra adventure now. Because, here no one is able to help you. Even if u wanna DNF, yu still need to find your own way down to the bottom or to where you started. And in the darkness, my journey continued…

Soon, the sunrise was to be seen. After a while, we have come to brightness, I believe I vomitted shortly before I arrived at the next station. Along the way just before reachiing the next station, I met cheerful Josephine Pipin and Carin Leong and also passing Rich Chai. I also remember, Rich telling me to think carefully if I really wanna ascendd to the top.

With Hendra, we arrive at the next station. Again, I told Hendra I will not continue to ascend. I felt sick again, looking at the food, which Hendra kept insisting for me to take some. Then he later told me, I am a little like Aki Niaki, we cant consume food in our journey! So after resting for a long while must have been half an hour at least. Then Hendra said if I dont eat, I will not be able to go to the summit. My heart had wanted to go to the summit but my physical body was incapable. Pipin, Carin and many others came and left to move on to the top. I kept telling them to go ahead as I was still contemplating!

I have by then met, Alex Sebangkit, to name one of them, Wailan Warokka and a few others that I cant remember the names of hand now.

Finally, Hendra said to me, why dont we go a little further, where we can see the summit. He was great at persuasion. So even though I didnt want to, I finally gave in to the prospect of looking at the summit. So off we go! So with that little bit of rice and tinned beef, like maybe 2 table spoons each, and some Pocari Sweat drink and some FITLINE Performance sachets, we left the station and went ascend again.

The loose gravels were extremely difficult to climb. The heat from the sun is now at its full blast. Along the way, we caught up with Pipin, with Carin, who later dropped off and turn around to go back not going up the summit.

We also passed by Jeff Ooi, Yim, many many others who had reached the summit and now on the way down. Still we went on.

At some stages, I stopped and soon I had no more water in my platypus, water pouch, I had to now take some from Hendra. At one time, I again said I think its a joke if I can get to the summit and Hendra again tricked me and told me why dont we go right to the white rock, and from there we will be able to get a clear full view of the summit.

Now, who doesnt wanna have a glimpse of the summit. But in my heart I know to get there tothe white rock is about 800 m more and thats felt like forever. But from the white rock, we will still have another 1.2 km to the summit. Still I finally agreed with Hendra and move up.

Inching u, Hendra met his friends and gave them his precious Coco de nato cup of desert drink which he had kept for himself to have when he get to the summit, so that was what he told me. But he gave it away anyway! That was so generous of him. Knowing there is nothing much else to drink when we get there!!!

At the rock, we took another break. took some photos. And along the way, we saw the new volcano formed Gunung Baru??, the lakes the beautiful scenary which were all so amazing, and to be able to look down onto these, i felt so happy and that lifted my feeling. Still I vomitted again! In total I have vomitted 3 times. That little bit of food i ate and the salt stick I took all came out again.

Nevertheless, we moved on, and on and on and on and on.

Finally we were there! The summit! Oh! what a feeling! It was absolutely unbelievable! I finally reached my destination, the peak of the Second Most Highest Volcano Peak of Indonesia. Christine Munro had just FB me to let me know that it is actually higher the Mt Cook in New Zealand!

We had my video done, my photos taken and did all the things we all do when we get to Mt Rinjani summit at 3,726 m!

Then we started descending…
