UTMB.

Bandung, 1987.Angan2 terkesan muluk. Sekali seumur hidup bisa menamatkan 10k dilomba lari manapun. Sudah pasti tak peduli podium. Bahkan tak pusing jikapun beberapa jam terlewat waktu Cut Off Timenya. Selama tak sampai berganti hari.

Bandung 2010.

Mencoba mulai berlari.

Kandas di 1km pertama. Menangispun bukan lagi dibuat- buat atau kiasan.

Plawangan Sembalun, 26 november 2012.

Nyaris tewas.

Percuma Teriak- Teriak Di Sosmed Juga, Ga Kan Didengerin..

6633

courtesy of wwwdot6633ultradotcom

8 manusia- manusia gilak, penamat lari dikutub utara. Sejauh 533km.

Saya balas pendek saja.

Dua tahun lalu ‘sulit’ mendapatkan peserta.
Padahal lari- trel tanah air belumlah seusia kebanyakan negara2 lain.

Luar- biasa pertama.

Alam indonesia yang luar- biasa.
Lari trel bisa dilakukan dimana saja.  Lari trel tak mesti lari gunung. Di pantai. Bahkan dikebun tetangga 🙂
Negara tetangga, saking sedikitnya punya gunung, bukitpun disebut gunung.
Nah kita, saking banyak gunung, gunungpun sering disebut bukit.

Luar- biasa yang kedua.
Juga bisa dilakukan siapa saja. Penduduknya yang super banyak. Cukup 1% saja yang melakukan, se asia tengggara habis diborong.

Luar- biasa yang ketiga.
Kapan saja.

Selamat siang, selamat hari senin 🙂

Hendra Buitenzorg

6633ultrahwfinish

Hendra Buitenzorg.
saya lupa tepatnya, rasa2nya pertengahan 2010.

Beliau?
Ternyata dia sudah siapkan beberapa lembar 5an ribu, lipat2 kecil.
Setiap ada warung dan perlu minum, cukup simpan lipatan 5an ribunya, ambil botol air kemasannya. Lanjut.
Saya? Sudah ketebak kan?
Hah heh hoh. Duduk dulu. Minum, ngemil, beberapa menit baru lanjut.
Gusti Nu Maha Suci. Kenapa lari trel koq ya tiba2 menjadi sedemikian beratnya ya?
Jadi? Ya iya lah, ketinggalan wae 😦
Bagi dia, waktu adalah lari.
Bagi saya mah, ngaso we.
Setelahnya adalah lari2 bersama.
Seolah, jika dia ajak saya tak menolak. Begitupun kebalikannya.

Anda semua.

Bravo Lari Trel Tanah- air, Bravo kita semua  🙂

Lomba Yang Bisa Dimenangkan Oleh Siapapun Kita

Kamojang-

Konyol sekali.
Ditengah- kegalauan saya, tiba2 saja Bang Muara Sianturi telpon,” Ki, jadi ikut Milo 10k?. Lo ikut Lomba Lintas Alam Kamojang aja, trel tuh”.
Pucuk dicinta ulam entah kemana eh si ulamnya tiba.
Yes.
Yg pasti dgn gagah percaya diri saya daftar.
Apalagi ternyata peserta kategori kecepatan( kita sebut lari trel kan)pesertanya hanya berlima. Haha. Sebelum2nya sampai 20-30an.
Selalu setia menemani  🙂 .
Dan percaya- diri yg entah darimana koq ya saya punyai.
Belasan km pertama, etape pertama adalah 25km, peserta lokal saya susul, juga Kang Pendaki Liar yg cidera. Kemudian lagi Bang Muara yg mengaku cidera. Berarti tinggal Bang Anwar didepan saya.
Singkat cerita saya finish 15 menit dibelakang beliau. Senang? Tentu saja. Aneh? Ya juga. Tapi saya tak ambil pusing. Saya nikmati saja dulu saat2 ini.
Kapan lagi saya merasakan saat2 kemenangan seperti ini. Seumur- umur lomba, hanya pernah juara di lomba balap… karung. Saat kelas 4 SD.
Itupun drama. Karena sempat diprotes peserta lain. Menurut mereka saya curang. Masa bukan loncat2 tapi melangkah.
Jika mau tentu saja trek yg ‘ hanya’ 25km disikat habis beliau.
Salam, selamat pagi, selamat hari jumat 🙂

The Interview

My answers to one of many interviews i’ve had.

Mengapa lari (dan bukan sepeda, nge gym, triathlon)?

Running has always been one of my dream.
It’s a pretty cool sport, where you have only your own body to depend on. with no extra help, unlike biking, swimming in a pool or any other certain physical activities.
You can pretty much do it anywhere, anytime. By yourself or with anyone else.
The reason i only got to do it now is solely because of that i was worried i wouldn’t’ve been able to do it.
I was born with asthma and bronchytis.
It was so overwhelming that at the tender age of 3 months, they claimed i was helpless.

Kapan mulai lari, dan sejak saat itu apa beda yang anda rasakan (dari segala sisi kehidupan, feel free to answer from any, or all, aspect)?

I actually tried running on 2000. I happened to see a couple of people did it on the tennis field (which i happen to not do anymore for 6 years).
It only lasted for a year ( a slow jog for 20 laps everyday). It was probably due to exhaustion (both tennis and my lack of dietery knowledge) tha i got hep. A.
I stayed in the hospital for 11 days.
It wan’t until 2010 that i got myself to do it again.
I made sure to consult on my health to a doctor this time.
I felt okay before. Normal. But after i did it a couple of times, i found myself to be in a way better condition than i’ve been before.
I rarely cough, nor have any asthma episode, i could even drink iced water.
It only gotten better after i started trail running for a couple of months.
Then even though i’m not exactly one of those gym bunnies, i can at least claim that i have a pretty good physique.
I fell in love with running. Mountain running. Especially when i’m by myself, like having a true me-time.
I get to be with my thoughts when i run. And at the same time i could think of planning of my next steps in life ahead of time.
This goes along really well with my job as a house planner, where i get strokes of ideas when i run.
I even sometimes think to myself “why didn’t i thought of that before?”.

I was perfectly happy before, but thankfully gotten even way happier after running.
Like for instance, i stopped and think how awesome it is to marvel at the wondrous nature and surrounding at a short period amount of time.
Instant mountain hopping, one day climbing. I went on the morning and got home by the evening.
Pretty cool, with little to no fuzz, like any hiking normally would be.

How many ultra runs (di atas 42.2km) and what’s the longest run, you’ve participated in, and can you share what went through your mind for such a long journey, and were there any point in which it was particularly challenging?

I do a lot of ultra runs by myself.
It started from my love and running and the realization that i’m not exactly young anymore. At the age of 54, i’m not able to do any routine training (as much as i probably should have), probably not a good thing to follow either.
I do ultra runs to accelerate. Meaning after 3 months of running, i did approximately 50-70k of long runs. By the 5th month, i’ve done about 80-100 k.
I remember during Bintaro- Bogor- Bintaro, i have the urge to meet with Kang Hendra Wijaya.
I had to do it twice, cause he couldn’t make it at first (97k).
Bintaro- Muara Angke- Bintaro, 66km.
– Bintaro-  Tangerang- Karawaci- BSD.95km.
– Sukabumi- Ujunggenteng, 126km,
-Pangalengan- Rancabuaya, 88km,
-The North Face Singapore trail race, 50km( 2nd trail run race).
-Kamojang, Jawa- Barat Trail Race. 25 +18km(2 etappe). Yes it’s only local, but i feel like i should include it.
This means the most to me, cause it’s my very 1st race. And i got 2nd place, of only 5 runners.Haha..
1st place (by 15 minutes at the 1st ettape, 25 k) was a 40 year old former athlete.
The 3rd place was a runner who’s started running longer than i had, also in his 40’s, presumably also a former athlete.
The track was unbelievable. There’s one that was about 1 km across a 50 cm deep river with a pretty rough stream, while the surrounding trees are so low that forced us to run while slightly bending over every now and then.
I have to thank Muara Sianturi, who also participated. Not for deciding to not join the ettape the next day, but for convincing me to join the race at all.
And i’m pretty sure he let me won 2nd place, which he could totally have won if he wanted to.
He was one of my mentors, along with Jerry Karundeng and a few others.

– Went on a power trail to 3 mountains, Salak, Gede, Pangrango, 65k with Kang Hendra Wijaya, Rudy Ansyah, Djawa, and some few others.
– Coast2Coast ( BromoTenggerSemeru). Running from the North coast of Java to the South coast of Java, through Bromo, Ranupane, Ranukumbolo. 134k
– Bandung- Cianjur- Bandung, 99k. At the Run & Roses event with Hendra Wijaya, Bugi. I picked Bugi up who ran from Bogor to Bandung, to give roses for his girlfriend who lives in Bandung.
– Bandung Karawang, 92k at the Allianz event.
– Kawahputih- Cidaun- Sindangbarang- Agrabinta, 159k with Hendra Wijaya & Rudy Ansyah.

– Bandung- Tasikmalaya, 99k.

How many long distance event have you participated in, and which one is most memorable, and why?

The North Face Singapore was the only long run event i’ve ever participated in.
But the most memorable one was probably the Kinabalu Climbathlon that wasn’t a long trail race.
With a name that majestic, it’s also notorious as the toughest mountain trail run event in the world.
Of course everyone was more than eager to conquer it. Especially for me, who is more than thankful for being able to partake at this age.
And i finished it at a normal pace. The COT was 3hrs 30 mins to the top (the veteran group).
During a couple of km left to the top (forgot when exactly), i found a couple of racers to be overwhelmed by it. Like they were starving and thirsty. Some were helping others by bringing them food and drinks till everyone managed to get back on their feet.
I was caught off guard for a while realizing how little my experience i had was.
So instead of continuing the race, i just stopped and overthink everything that could go wrong. Like what if that happened to me?
I didn’t realize how long i was stopping. After dusting myself off i continued the race.
At 3850 mdpl (The Kinabalu top is 4052 mdpl) i arrived at just the time limit (COT) of 3 hours 30 mins.
Which means i’m DNF.
But for some reason i feel no regrets whatsoever. Eventhough i longed to win it at first.
I felt like i was more than content.
Sure i didn’t get the medal i could show off to people. But the validation that i could finish the race was enough for me.
I didn’t participate in any race eversince.

After the last Kinabalu event i mostly do local trail run events, and i decided to just do so. Which turned out to be more challenging for me, a lot more fun and more beautiful.
I also feel the responsibility to re-introduce my country to people outside.

What is your biggest running achievement (does’t have to be race related)?

I think every experience was a great achievement for me.

How do you keep yourself motivated, to continue running?

Sport is an invesment to our health for now and in the future. And to me running is the best.
I think of running as the lowest form of a high health insurance. Not only that, t also make me feel good, and happier.
Sounds exaggerating but that’s how i feel.

What would be your most important advise, to beginner runners?

It’s so simple to just start with very much benefits. If you ever have any doubts of starting something, be my guest. But if it’s running,
Just run, once it is done, the rest is addiction.

What is your running goal, race wise? What is your running goal, in general?

My goal is to take tiny steps but faster and further everytime. Hopefully by the end of 2014 i could join the triathlon.

Who’s your favorite runner, and why?

My favorite runners are the new ones wo just started but already have high spirits. They’re the ones who motivate me to do more.
Because no matter how simple running is, getting started is the hardest part.

Barefoot shoes or anything with thin soles. laceless for practicallity. As for dangerous terrains such as cliffs, steep steps i go with Salomon S-Lab… and.. err Eiger for sure 🙂 . For average category i choose Teva and New Balance.

Mt Rinjani Ultra 2013. The Story

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERASegaraAnakOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAMt Rinjani Ultra DNF Up to 29.13 km only, after that I turn off my Garmin coz there is no more battery.

I started the journey at 600m, reaching Station 1 5.9 km in 1.29 mins and reaching Station 2 2600 m later about 10 km at 3.40 mins. But it was at this station, where I tried to rest for a short while. I felt breathless, I couldnt eat anything in sight, I couldnt even drink much. I couldnt take my energy sachets or anything. At this point, I wanted to give up and wanted to stop.

Hendra Wijaya, was waiting for the 21 km runners, saw me. He told me if I want to quit and return I will have a longer journey. He persuaded me to get to the next station. So we moved on, with very much difficulty. The rocks were huge, it was dark. At that point, I felt so lucky to just have 1 tracking pole as i really need the other hand to hold on to whatever is there and use the one pole I have to help me with my journey on! I remember there were massive rocks, many times I felt like dying because my tummy was very hard, yet there was no vomits nothing.

Hendra was all the time right behind me. I remember, earlier that evening, Nefo had told me that Hendra will not be climbing the Mt Rinjani. Anyhow, I was thankful he was right behind me. As sick as I was, I know what is an ultra adventure now. Because, here no one is able to help you. Even if u wanna DNF, yu still need to find your own way down to the bottom or to where you started. And in the darkness, my journey continued…

Soon, the sunrise was to be seen. After a while, we have come to brightness, I believe I vomitted shortly before I arrived at the next station. Along the way just before reachiing the next station, I met cheerful Josephine Pipin and Carin Leong and also passing Rich Chai. I also remember, Rich telling me to think carefully if I really wanna ascendd to the top.

With Hendra, we arrive at the next station. Again, I told Hendra I will not continue to ascend. I felt sick again, looking at the food, which Hendra kept insisting for me to take some. Then he later told me, I am a little like Aki Niaki, we cant consume food in our journey! So after resting for a long while must have been half an hour at least. Then Hendra said if I dont eat, I will not be able to go to the summit. My heart had wanted to go to the summit but my physical body was incapable. Pipin, Carin and many others came and left to move on to the top. I kept telling them to go ahead as I was still contemplating!

I have by then met, Alex Sebangkit, to name one of them, Wailan Warokka and a few others that I cant remember the names of hand now.

Finally, Hendra said to me, why dont we go a little further, where we can see the summit. He was great at persuasion. So even though I didnt want to, I finally gave in to the prospect of looking at the summit. So off we go! So with that little bit of rice and tinned beef, like maybe 2 table spoons each, and some Pocari Sweat drink and some FITLINE Performance sachets, we left the station and went ascend again.

The loose gravels were extremely difficult to climb. The heat from the sun is now at its full blast. Along the way, we caught up with Pipin, with Carin, who later dropped off and turn around to go back not going up the summit.

We also passed by Jeff Ooi, Yim, many many others who had reached the summit and now on the way down. Still we went on.

At some stages, I stopped and soon I had no more water in my platypus, water pouch, I had to now take some from Hendra. At one time, I again said I think its a joke if I can get to the summit and Hendra again tricked me and told me why dont we go right to the white rock, and from there we will be able to get a clear full view of the summit.

Now, who doesnt wanna have a glimpse of the summit. But in my heart I know to get there tothe white rock is about 800 m more and thats felt like forever. But from the white rock, we will still have another 1.2 km to the summit. Still I finally agreed with Hendra and move up.

Inching u, Hendra met his friends and gave them his precious Coco de nato cup of desert drink which he had kept for himself to have when he get to the summit, so that was what he told me. But he gave it away anyway! That was so generous of him. Knowing there is nothing much else to drink when we get there!!!

At the rock, we took another break. took some photos. And along the way, we saw the new volcano formed Gunung Baru??, the lakes the beautiful scenary which were all so amazing, and to be able to look down onto these, i felt so happy and that lifted my feeling. Still I vomitted again! In total I have vomitted 3 times. That little bit of food i ate and the salt stick I took all came out again.

Nevertheless, we moved on, and on and on and on and on.

Finally we were there! The summit! Oh! what a feeling! It was absolutely unbelievable! I finally reached my destination, the peak of the Second Most Highest Volcano Peak of Indonesia. Christine Munro had just FB me to let me know that it is actually higher the Mt Cook in New Zealand!

We had my video done, my photos taken and did all the things we all do when we get to Mt Rinjani summit at 3,726 m!

Then we started descending…

This is my story of my love affair with Mt Rinjani sometime on 17 August 2013!!

The road has finally been paved. Hopefully Indonesia could be the world’s ultra trail destination or at least Asean. No one can stop our intention to grow further from here on – Hendra wijaya
